Today’s post is a little different. I wanted to dedicate today to the title of a great Dr. Seuss book because, in a way, it is what inspired me to write this blog. I kept thinking about the title: Oh, the Places You’ll Go… Where? Where will I go? And that got me to thinking, where do I want to go? Where have I been? Thus followed a blog about travels of the wishful kind. This, all inspired from a book title, so I reread this book which I hadn’t read in years.
The book, because it is filled with simple, childlike rhymes, is thought to be a child’s book, and I suppose it is… but I think it’s worthwhile for adults to read too.
“You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.”
Ok. I’m in charge of my life. I have to look at it and decide where I want to go, and then get myself there. It’s all on me.
“You won’t lag behind, because you’ll have the speed.
You’ll pass the whole gang and you’ll soon take the lead.
Wherever you fly, you’ll be best of the best.
Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.
“Except when you don’t.
Because, sometimes, you won’t.
“I’m sorry to say so
but, sadly, it’s true
can happen to you.”
Sometime I will succeed. I’ll get where I want to be… and then again, sometimes I won’t. But that’s life, and I still have my brains and my feet so I’ll just have to keep going.
“Oh, the places you’ll go! There is fun to be done!
There are points to be scored. There are games to be won.
And the magical things you can do with that ball
will make you the winning-est winner of all.
Fame! You’ll be as famous as famous can be,
with the whole wide world watching you win on TV.
“Except when they don’t
Because, sometimes they won’t.”
Again, life is full of successes and failures. Sometime we get where we want to go, and sometimes we don’t.
“You’ll get mixed up, of course,
as you already know.
You’ll get mixed up
with many strange birds as you go.
So be sure when you step.
Step with care and great tact
and remember that Life’s
a Great Balancing Act.
Just never forget to be dexterous and deft.
And never mix up your right foot with your left.
“And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!
(98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)
“KID, YOU’LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!
be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O’Shea,
You’re off the Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So…get on your way!”
Obstacles are always around us. Everyday, we fight them, beating some and falling to others. But Dr. Seuss reminds us that we can all succeed if we put out minds to it. We can achieve anything, and go anywhere. “Oh, the places you’ll go!” Suddenly, all my dreaming about where I want to go someday doesn’t seem so unrealistic… I just hope my chances of getting there are as good as the Dr. says… “98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.”
Sorry if this post disappoints you. I know it doesn’t follow my usual pattern of picking a place I want to go or that I have been to and loved, but I wanted you all to know why I wanted to write those posts in the first place. Still, I will finish with a bit of my usual posting patterns and tell you about a place I both love and want to go to again: a bookstore… and I recommend you going too and reading this book!
